HIV/AIDS - Get Tested!

Deaf Gay / Bisexual Men: Do You Know Your HIV Status?

Today is National Gay Men’s HIV/AIDS Awareness Day.  According to a survey conducted by the Center for Disease Control (CDC), one in five sexually active Gay and Bisexual men living in the U.S. are infected with HIV and half of them don’t know it.

The number of new HIV infections is increasing each year among men who have sex with men.  The CDC recommends routine HIV tests for everyone. For Gay and Bisexual men, CDC recommends being tested for HIV at least once per year and for those who have anonymous or multiple male sex partners, every three to six months.

Take action in the fight against HIV/AIDS. Know your HIV status and get tested regularly.

This captioned video, featuring Deaf Gay Ace Gilliam, is part of the “I’m from Driftwood” series of stories by LGBTQ people.

After watching the video, we tracked down Ace for a mini-interview. He’s now 21 and still calls Las Vegas home.

Planet DeafQueer: Tell us a little bit about how you came to participate in this video project.

Paul + Bob

Paul P. Adams + Robert Rourke

Bob Rourke and Paul Adams were one of over 18,000 couples to legally marry in California prior to the passing of Proposition 8.  They were married at San Francisco’s City Hall on July 28, 2008.  And yes, they wore shorts (as shown)!

The couple, who reside in Alexandria, Virginia, recently celebrated their 4th anniversary.  Like many couples, they chose to keep their last names.

Congratulations!

Juan + Tim

Juan Bernal + Tim Mahoney

Juan Bernal and Tim Mahoney were married on Saturday, June 2, 2012 in Chicago IL after being together for 11 years. Along with Juan’s three Deaf children, over 125 friends, family and co-workers attended the ceremony.

“The state of Illinois recently announced the passage of civil union marriage,” said Juan. ” The time was right to go ahead and make the relationship legal.”

Congratulations!

It’s Time

It’s time to end marriage discrimination. This beautiful marriage equality ad was produced by Get Up! Action for Australia.

Check out Cesar Ayala’s Deaf Queer version of it (with a twist!).

Steve + Jerry

Jerry Guiffra + Steve Lovi

Steve Lovi and Jerry Guiffra were married on Sunday, August 19, 2012, at Artistanworks in Rochester, NY.  The wedding took place on their 10th anniversary weekend.
