Dawn Ramos + Laurie Ovesen

Dawn Ramos (Deaf) and Laurie Ovesen (Hearing) met in Sacramento, California 14 years ago.  Dawn was Laurie’s ASL teacher and they began dating after the semester ended.  They fell in love and in 1998, the lovebirds tied the knot in Loomis, California. Dawn took on Laurie’s last name and they began a family together a few months after their wedding.  The couple have two children, Jack, age 13, and Meg, age 10, and run a canine boarding and daycare business in Maple Valley, Washington.

Jada Pinkett-Smith is aware of the critics that stick up their noses at the way she raises her daughter, Willow. Willow cuts, dyes and styles her hair as she pleases, a fact that bothers many who feel girls shouldn’t have that much control over their appearance at such a young age.

Deaf Lesbian couple Lisa Marie Wilson and Noreen Yates legally marry in this mini-documentary that was shot on October 29, 2008 in San Francisco. The couple feared their marriage would be declared invalid if Proposition 8 passed in California on November 4th, 2008.

Remembering Gayle

I first met Gayle when I was working at the Deaf Gay and Lesbian Center back in the early 90’s. She’d come to an event we’d sponsored, complete in full leather attire. When the event was over, she offered to stay and help me clean up. While we cleaned, I learned she was looking for a new place to live and I mentioned that I’d seen a vacancy sign just a block down from my apartment on Market Street in the Castro.

The 7th biennial Deaf Lesbian Festival took place July 18 – 21, 2012 in Chicago, IL. Sixty-nine Deaf Lesbians attended the event which included workshops, entertainment, activities, a Dyke Ball, sightseeing and socializing.

Deaf Lesbian Festival 2014 Committee

The next Deaf Lesbian Festival will take place from June 4-8, 2014, in Phoenix, Arizona.  The 2014 DLF Committee is already hard at work organizing the event.  Committee members are (as pictured) Erica Calders, Carol Newman, Kathleen Ferguson, Delynn Saunders, Donna Neri, and Suzi Scaletta. Not shown, but also part of the committee, Jennifer Simpson and Sharon Levine.  

Support Jade’s Latest Film

African-American Deaf Lesbian filmmaker Jade Bryan is seeking your support for her latest work, The Double Life of Zhane Rain. The film (which has yet to be produced) is about a young high school girl who suffers from a brain injury.

Jade is seeking $100,000 in funds to produce the film. Head over to Indiegogo to make a donation.

Jac Cook and Denise Madland tied the knot on August 17, 2012, at Newcastle Wedding Gardens – Red Horse Barn in Newcastle, CA.

“It was an amazing day!” said Jac. “Having friends and family witness and bless our union made it so powerful.  We feel this marriage is on an even deeper level now. We are so lucky to have found each other and to be sealed for life!”

Happy one year anniversary to Sally and Tonya Nourse-Garza who tied the knot a year ago on June 18th, 2011, at the Cocoanut Grove at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk.

“We just want to thank our wonderful families and friends for their support and compliments,” Sally told us. “We are very much in love being happy married. We went back to Santa Cruz where we got married for our 1st anniversary together and had a fabulous time. Our three sons, Jacob, Jared are going to be seniors this year, and Noah is going to be in 6th grade. They are doing well and excited to go back to school to see their friends. We are looking forward to spending quality time with our family for the rest of our lives.”
